PopTech Highlights from Benjamen Walker as told to RM

Friday, October 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | No Comments

While Benjamen Walker pulls together audio for the stream, I thought I’d highlight some of the people he’s speaking with and is really excited about. Dan Ariely is back at PopTech and his latest talk was apparently as awesome as his last one from 2009, which is one of my absolute favorites on REMIX. Here’s the vid:

Benjamen also spoke with Kathryn Schulz who I know from Walker’s Too Much Information episode called, “Mistake Were Made.” That’s a good episode, check it out.

REMIXing PopTech

PopTech is a network of world changing innovators and every year a bunch of them cloister together in Camden, Maine and give talks, exchange ideas, and solve the world’s problems. Then they’ll most likely get back home and crash into the wall of anti-innovation that surrounds us all, but for these few days in Camden (and in your home- they live stream all the talks!) it will feel like anything is possible. That feeling is infectious, intoxicating, and quite fun to listen to.

We play a few of the great PopTech audio programs from conferences past on the stream, but this year REMIX is actually going to be there. Our own world changing innovator Benjamen Walker (he of Too Much Information) is going to the talks, roaming the halls, and bringing back stories and snippets from the 2010 conference. Keep checking back here and tune in for updates.

In the meantime, here’s a talk that I really dig by public radio’s Kurt Andersen (Hands off, book people. He’s ours!):

The press is on to us!

The paper of record for the Public Media “industry” wrote a nice introduction to REMIX this week. I like this quote from REMIX pioneer and Spokane Public Radio president, Richard Kunkel, “…made entirely of driveway moments.” Nice!

Two Wheels to Nowhere

Aengus Anderson actually did it. That dream- the cross country trip on a motorcycle- writing, and in this case recording, all along the way: 13,843 miles, 89 days, 37 states, 166 interviews.

The result is a 7(!) part free range audio docudrama that explores how Americans are facing the unknown. He asked each person two questions: what is the most exciting thing in your life? What is the most concerning thing?

The result is a moody, winding tale that never feels slow or depressing, which I think may be harder and  even more impressive than a 14K motorcycle trip. Third Coast conducted an interview with Aengus about the series that you should check out. You can listen, rate and review the the whole series on PRX.org, or just wait for it to come on REMIX by chance, which I think may be the best way to encounter it.

One Hello World

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

One Hello World is the sort of project that makes you happy the internet exists. Regular people from all over the country call 316-247-0421 and share their intimate thoughts and experiences and an extremely talented, anonymous composer creates a soundtrack to the voicemail and releases it as a song on the One Hello World website. I think it may be the best thing in the world right now.

I still don’t know who is behind the project, but over email, I encouraged him/her to upload as many of the compositions as possible to PRX so I could play them all for you, and I’m happy to say we have nine pieces in rotation right now. I hope more are coming. This is pretty much why REMIX exists- create an open format so cool and amazing stories of all kinds can be heard.

Everything is a Remix from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

A very nicely made video (thanks Jake!), that pretty much says it all (until Part 2, of course). Everything is a Remix! Huzzah!
