Rip and Rebind: The First Five

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 | cool, shows, Uncategorized | No Comments

From Rip and Rebind mastermind Carl Scott:

Rip and Rebind is an anthropological snapshot of life taken with hip-hop’s camera. Through a collaged narrative reflecting the mash-up genre whose origins are largely found in Hip-Hop, this sonic journey confirms that the music is a reflection of the people. The series aims to preserve an honest perception of an artistic expression that has too often been commodified. Sample-heavy and audibly rich, Rip and Rebind is essentially cultural “crate-digging.”

The phrase “rip and rebind” comes from the publishing industry. When a successful book is being re-published as a paperback, sometimes there is an abundance of hardcover editions left over. In order to reuse the hardcovers for this new purpose, the books are ripped from their hard shells and re-bound as paperbacks for a new audience of readers.

This show was created, hosted and produced by my REMIX colleague Carl Scott and I’m honored to have it be the first radio series produced with REMIX in mind. The first five episodes are on the stream, but you can listen and rate them on demand at their home on PRX.

Toward a Patronage Society

I love this talk by performer/thinker/Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer about how artists need to survive in the modern era. We just got permission to play the full talk over the electromagnetic airwaves (Thanks Amanda and Sean!), but here’s the moving picture version, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Plus, I’ve been on an Eric Molinsky buying spree this morning, so stay tuned for his pieces on REMIX. He is a contributing producer at Studio 360 and the kid is good! I’ve actually been familiar with him for some time, but I never listened to ten of his pieces in a row like today. The Eric Molinsky Power Hour. Anyway, here’s a list of all the pieces he has on PRX. Listen, rate or write a review. If you heed Amanda Palmer, you could always send him a dollar.

All the Planets Wonders Available on YouTube

Josie Long makes me happy. Her BBC Radio 4 series, produced by the awesome Colin Anderson, is without a doubt, my favorite radio from the last couple of years. Unfortunately, the BBC doesn’t have it available all the time, beaming directly into my head, so some fantastic person put them on YouTube. There are only four episodes, and I know I’ve mentioned the show before, but listen now. Whether or not you chose to awkwardly stare at the still photo of Josie at the same time is up to you.

Series one is locked up rights-wise, so I can’t broadcast it on the REMIX Radio stream, but I hear that series two is being commissioned by the internet, so you will hear it as soon as Josie turns in her scripts and it gets produced.

Goofing around with Michele Norris

Years ago I worked for the fine folks at the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and I made all the audio stuff for them. I produced shows, specials and promos. Well, the other day I found this REJECTED promo I made for an event called “Meet the Makers” that happened back in 2007. Michele Norris from NPR was the host of the event, but she was busy making ATC everyday, so she never had time to record the copy, so I was forced to make a promo without her. I made this:

This promo was very popular around the offices of WBEZ, but alas, it didn’t make it on the air. Why? STICKS IN THE MUD! Years have passed, so I thought it was safe to enjoy it publicly.

Book Odds REMIX: a preview

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 | cool, sound, stories | No Comments

This past weekend, REMIX Radio from PRX and the Third Coast International Audio Festival presented a REMIX/ShortDoc extreme challenge. For this year’s ShortDoc, the band The Books have selected eight sample sounds from their library of musical bits for anyone and everyone to use in their own radio story. That contest is going on right now and the winner will present their ShortDoc at the opening session of the Third Coast Conference in October. Check here for full details. You should definitely check it out, create a story and enter. But at Megapolis this past weekend, we wanted to try something a little more extreme. Unlike the general Third Coast challenge (in which producers are required to select only two sounds to work with) the Megapolis Book Odds REMIXers used ALL EIGHT sounds, plus the patented “PRX chime” (and any other sound they wish) and pulled it all together into a one-minute composition in 30 minutes! Cool sounds + super talented audio artists + 30 minutes  + flop sweat = awesome. I’m posting them all this week (both here and on the satellite), but here’s a preview of one of the entries by Kara Oehler and Benjamen Walker:

Megapolis! Audio Art! Hurray!

n57854967097_1569The Megapolis Festival is an annual, weekend-long celebration of the craft of DIY audio creation. Artists, documentarians, musicians, and fans come together to share secrets on producing and presenting cool and challenging audio works online, on-air, and on the stage. This year, the fun will take place May 14-16 in Baltimore, MD. Oh, I’m excited. Your’s truly is leading a REMIX workshop, plus TMI’s Benjamen Walker is going to be there, and a panoply of truly intimidating audio artists and storytellers. Well, their work is intimidating, they are quite nice and physically they tend to be weak in the upper body.

Here’s the promo for the event featuring a catchy little ditty from one of the greats, Gregory Whitehead:

So, you coming?

Gurus, Crackpots, Hucksters, Ordinary Folks, and your host Benjamen Walker tell tall tales and share intimate stories about the world where nothing seems real and everything is downloadable. All past episodes are running around the clock and new ones are added every Wednesday on PRX: REMIX. It’s the, um, best show on WFMU. Not to be missed.

Preach on, brother! Plus, that brat pack video mash-up was the reason I bought the Phoenix album. Just so you know.
